"Art grows out of each particular situation, and I believe that artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws up." El Anatsui
It is that time of year again on the Nigerian Art Scene; the annual National Art Competition by African Artists' Foundation. This year, as always there are some well thought out and conceptually sound ideas. It is always interesting to see how these ideas come to life at the Grand Finale exhibition, later on in the year. Once more, the acclaimed visual artist, El Anatsui, heads the panel of judges.
I have recently been very inspired by Anatsui's older wooden panel works; I like the way they are somewhat crude but elegant, refined but raw and above all precious and earthy at the same time. He is also lots of fun to hang out with!
